SHOW

NOTES: The Cruisers gave it a whirl in a NSA "D" Level tournament this past weekend at the Yard. Dana Oviatt made his debut at SS and Danny Mendoza filled in at 2B. The teeam played it's best overall defensive game to date... which allowed the Cruisers to win their first 'str8-up" tournament to date. NSA used the modified homerun rule at the Yard on this weekend, with a 1-up/out rule. Kudos to Timmy Wilson who had his second consecutive tournament with a .813 On Base Percentage. Joey Fernandez took the MVP honors however, with a .688 avg, and 10 RBI. Dana Oviatt was the defensive MVP playing a STELLAR Shortstop. All in all, the team as a whole REALLY stepped and deserves all the accolades.

GAME 1

vs. LA Pitbulls

Win

11-1

We started the day off a bit slow. The Pitbulls took and early 1-0 lead, but the Cruisers were able to slowly pile on. With a 6-1 lead going into the bottom of the 5th, we put together 5 runs, capped by a Bruce Wonderlick RBI double to earn the automatic mercy rule.

GAME 2

@ Hitmen

Win

15-14

We jumped out to a solid 9-3 lead through two innings. After scoring only 11 in the first game, this felt like a good leap. Jason Sullivan hit a three-run jack in the top of the 2nd to highlight the scoring. As the game wore on, the hitmen battled back, and were able to make it a 15-10 game going into the bottom of the 7th. The Hitmen had pushed four rush across, and had runners on 1st and 2nd with only one out. Nick Cantu made a great play at 3B to get the 2nd out, and Fernandez enduced a pop-up to one of their hot hitters to preserve the win.

GAME 3

vs. Leathal Weapon

Win

14-13

Heading into the undefeated finals, the Cruisers were taking on a hot Leathal Weapon squad. LW had bumped the P-Mount Boys down to the losers bracket a game earlier and were playing some hot ball. The game was tight throughout, as Leathal Weapon took a 9-8 lead into the top of the 7th. With one out and the bases juiced, their clean up hitter Charles hit a MONSTER grandslam that cleared BOTH fences at the yard (we played field one, landed on field #2). Down five going into the bottom of the 7th, the Cruisers rallied with some clutch hits. With two outs, Pat Sullivan hit an RBI double, putting himself on 2nd as the tying run. Andy Solis came up to bat and hit a monster two-run home-run to OPPOSITE FIELD of all places to give the Cruisers a birth into the CHAMPIONSHIP game!!

GAME 4

@ Leathal Weapon

Win

26-11

At the urging of the players, manager Dan Romero won the toss and opted for sticks. After suffering the demoralizing loss, plus adding the fact they had to play more games... we wanted to put 'em down early. The strategy played out nicely at first as we plated eight runs, highlighted by a three-run home run from Bruce Wonderlick. Leathal Weapon did fight back with three in the first and two in the second. Leading 15-11 going into the top of the 7th, the Cruisers knew they had to do some damage... and damage they did. With two outs, and one run across, the Cruisers went on to plate ten more runs, and put away demoralized Leathal Weapon squad. The win allowed for the first "WALKKOFF" Cruiser championship in team history. "This is a proud moment for the team. Hopefully we can build off this win and parlay it into much success in the future." said Manager Romero
