CRUISERS WIN AMCOM TOURNAMENT!
July 21, 2001
Orange, CA
- The Madden Cruiser Coed team headed out to Big
Bear this past weekend for a weekend of fun in the
sun and softball. Most of the team headed up Friday
night with the exception of Chad Bickley and Joe
Fernandez. The team stayed at the cabins of Bruce
Wonderlick and Leeann Gonzalez.
Saturday was
spent on the Big Bear lake taking in rays, and a
few chilly brew-hahas. All the team members present
(sans Wonderlick) took a dip in the lake to assure
the team a tournament victory on Sunday.
Sunday morning
saw the Cruisers drive across the "Hill" to Lake
Gregory where team Madden took on the Blue Crew.
The first inning turned out to be a laugher as the
ball club hit the three allowable homeruns en route
to a 13 run first. Even the light hitting Dan
Romero took a ball over the fence to record the
first OUT of the inning. "Figures, the first time I
take a ball over the fence, it counts as an out.
Kickin myself." said Romero. The Cruisers walked
off with a 17-5 mercy rule victory.
The next game
saw the Cruiser take on a decent Bombers squad. The
Umpire informred team madden that this was the team
to beat. Well, we edged by them by a count of
12-10, but really we didn't feel too much in
jeopordy.
The third game
was highlighted by a first inning Triple play
turned in by a revamped infield. A sharp hit ball
to bickley at SS, stepped on 2nd base, tossed it to
first for the second out... and Wonderlick threw
back to third to catch a leaning runner. The
Cruisers then went on to score four runs in the
bottom half of the inning to give the team a 21-5
win. Nick Cantu had a couple of homeruns and 6
RBI's in this game.
The Final pitted
the Cruiser vs. the Bombers for the championship
shirts. Amy Romero had another big game, going four
for five including a three-run homerun. Bruce
Wonderlick came up with a CLUTCH two out hit to
drive in some insurance runs in the top half of the
7th. The Cruisers held on for the 12-8 win, and
took home their first tournament
championship.
"I AM SO HAPPY
WE WON!!! I LOVE THIS TEAM!" said an extatic Leeann
Gonzalez. Amie Barnes & Michelle Gonzalez were
quoted as saying, "This is a great day in Cruiser
history. I'm proud to wear Orange on this day"
Amanda Reeder was unavailable for
comment.
Tournament MVP
awards went to Nick Cantu & Amy Romero. Cantu
went 10 for 14, and drove in 16 runs. Romero went
11 for 16 and drove in eight runs. Other noteables
included Bruce Wonderlick (10 for 13) and Chad
Bickely (10 for 14). All in all, it was a great day
for softball. (Pictuers and stats to come
shortly)
